Prison Projects

Next has worked on behalf of or in cooperation with the prison departments of Sicily and Calabria, with cooperatives and social work organisations. 

Since 2001, Next has been designing and delivering training course and pieces of research targeted both to inmates and members of the prison staff in Sicily and Calabria.

Next delivers such activities on behalf of the Prison Administration and in cooperation with third sector organizations. Next produced - on behalf of the Sicilian probation service - a Service Charter about alternative measures to detention aiming to support with information about rights and procedures a wide range of stakeholders: offenders, families, prison and social services staff.

Besides, on behalf of the same institutional stakeholder (Ministry of Justice and for network related services: health units, community education and recovery, local social services), has designed and implemented training programs for the development of innovative skills to fight the drug and alcohol abuse.

As host organization has followed Italian and foreign prisoners on parole supporting them in their social reinsertion experiences.

Between 2009 and 2010 the Next research staff has been engaged in two projects to evaluate national policies in the field of addictions, health and detention.

In 2010 Next has organised a training course on “New drugs and consumptions. Lights in the night” addressed to social workers of private and Public Health Service, on behalf of the Province of Catania and the Sicilian Prison Administration.

In 2009 Next has carried out a Research about “Alternatives measures to detention for drug users” on behalf of Florence University.

In 2008 Next has carried out a Research and a Training course on "Addiction, consumption styles and patterns in the circuit criminal trattamentali Regional Sicily" in the prisons of Catania Piazza Lanza, Messina and Augusta (SR), on behalf of Sicilian Prison Administration. National research on "Intervention strategy for social inclusion of children with particular regard to the territorial level" on behalf of ISFOL–Roma.

In 2007 Activities for Training and Research on social discomfort and deviance, in the II and VII in the district of Palermo, addressed to the police and operators of health services, educational institutions, voluntary and private social on behalf of Municipality of Palermo (Social sector activities, minor office) and of the Prefecture in field of the Project “The security law” (PON “Security for development of southern Italy”). Ideation Cycle training entitled “The difficult path to recognition of the psychosocial work with addicted individuals: issues of deepening and development prospects” addressed to operators of services for addictions on behalf of Ufficio dell’Esecuzione Penale Esterna (Ministry of Justice) in Catania, Siracusa and Ragusa.

In 2006 four days of training given to staff of the prison guard in field of the course “What and How to look beyond the gates : Integrated pathways to taxable addicted inmates on behalf of Provveditorato Regionale Amministrazione Penitenziaria – Ministry of Justice. Planning and coordinating a training course about methodology of work with drug addicts in collaboration with the Ufficio per l’Esecuzione Penale Esterna of the Ministry of Justice in Palermo.
